Cellular Energy & NAD+ Support

So you're here because...

Are you feeling foggy, slower to recover, or generally just older than you would like to feel?

As we age, our cells produce less and less of a substance called NAD+. Think of it as the vital fuel your cells run on. Without enough of it, everything physically and mentally slows down.

This decline happens to everyone as they age, men and women alike, and it's one reason many of us notice we have less energy and take longer to bounce back than we used to. For women, the hormonal changes of perimenopause and menopause are thought to add to it, which is why NAD+ is attracting growing interest in women's health.

NAD+, NMN, and NR: what's actually the difference?

You've probably seen "NAD+" mentioned by health influencers, celebrities, and in glossy wellness articles — often as an expensive IV drip or injection. You might have also seen NMN talked about online, sometimes framed as a cheaper alternative. Here's what's actually going on, in plain English.

NAD+ (the bread): this is the molecule your cells actually use for energy — it's the end goal your body is working toward. However, NAD+ itself is a large, unstable molecule that doesn't survive digestion. If you swallow it as a capsule, your digestive system breaks it down before it ever reaches your cells. This is why it's associated with expensive clinics: currently, an IV drip is the only way to get raw NAD+ straight into your bloodstream.

NR and NMN (the flour): think of NAD+ like bread and precursors like flour. Bread goes stale quickly and doesn't travel well through your stomach. Flour, on the other hand, is stable, easy to transport, and can be turned into fresh bread exactly when and where it's needed. NR and NMN are stable enough to swallow as standard capsules, which your body then "bakes" into fresh NAD+ once they're safely inside your cells.

Why we recommend NR over NMN

On paper, NMN looks like it should be a shortcut because it's chemically one step closer to becoming NAD+ than NR. But there's a catch:

  • Cell entry: scientists aren't yet certain NMN can get into human cells directly. The "doorway" that lets NMN enter has only been confirmed in mice, not humans. In practice, NMN may have to break down and become NR anyway before your cells can use it, which undercuts the "shortcut" idea. NR, by contrast, has a well-established, confirmed route into human cells.

  • Clinical backing: the specific, patented Niagen® form of NR we recommend is backed by more human clinical trials than any other NAD+ precursor on the market.

  • UK law: NR is legally authorised for sale in the UK, and its safety notifications have been accepted by the US FDA. NMN is currently under active assessment by the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) as a "novel food" and hasn't yet been authorised for sale in Great Britain. We're not prepared to recommend supplements sitting in regulatory uncertainty when a well-tested, legally clear alternative is right there.

What we recommend, and why

We recommend NR by "Tru Niagen" — specifically their patented Niagen® form of Nicotinamide Riboside.

NR is one of the most effective, direct ways to raise cellular NAD+ levels. It's a specialist form of Vitamin B3 that your body recognises and uses efficiently, unlike basic niacin or standard B3 supplements.

Why the source of your NR matters

Not all NR is the same. Most cheap, unbranded NR degrades on the shelf before it ever reaches you — effectively turning into a basic B vitamin with none of the cellular energy benefits you paid for.

This isn't a small risk: testing by ChromaDex, the maker of Niagen, found that 76% of NAD+ supplements sold on Amazon failed to meet their label claims, with more than half containing virtually no active NAD+ precursors at all. We specify Niagen® because it's the form with the most published safety data, including safety notifications accepted by the US FDA, and the exact form used in the major clinical studies you may have read about.

A note on the capsule format

Tru Niagen comes in simple, plant-based capsules. This is a deliberate choice, not a cost-cutting one. NR is one of the few supplements naturally stable enough to survive your stomach acid completely intact. It doesn't need to be wrapped in oils or given fancy coatings to work.

Anyone charging a premium for "liposomal" or softgel versions of NR is adding to the price tag without adding any actual benefit.

How to take it

  • Timing: take your capsule first thing in the morning, as early as you can manage. Because it actively boosts cellular energy production, taking it later in the day can make it harder to wind down at night — think of it like a cup of morning coffee.

  • Tea and coffee: your morning tea or coffee is absolutely fine alongside it. Caffeine and tannins don't interfere with how NR works.

  • Food: food is optional. You can take it on an empty stomach or with your breakfast, whichever fits your routine.

  • Pairs well with:

  • TMG: when you raise NAD+ levels, your body uses up molecules called methyl groups, and TMG replaces them. As with everything we recommend, start one supplement at a time: settle into NR first, then add TMG if you choose to.

  • Apigenin: apigenin acts as a shield to protect your newly created NAD+ from being broken down prematurely by enzymes.

Worth knowing

  • Food & drink: there are no significant food or drink interactions to worry about. Grapefruit juice (which interferes with many other supplements) isn't a concern with NR.

  • Building up over time: NR doesn't build up to excess levels in your system. It's water-soluble, so your body takes what it needs and naturally flushes out the rest. That said, more isn't better — stick to the recommended 300mg daily dose.

  • Patience: most people notice improved daytime energy and mental clarity within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use. Some feel it sooner, particularly if their natural NAD+ levels were heavily depleted. It tends to feel subtle rather than dramatic — more like feeling like your normal, capable self again rather than a sudden jolt of caffeine. Give it a consistent 6 to 8 weeks before drawing conclusions.

  • Medications & safety: avoid if pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18. If you're on any medication that directly affects cellular growth (particularly certain cancer treatments), please check with your GP before starting.

  • Storage: keep the bottle in a cool, dry place and leave the silica moisture sachet inside — humidity can degrade the active compound over time.

Do you need to take a break?

No. NR is safe for continuous daily use and works best when taken consistently. There's no need to cycle on and off.
