NAD+ Protection & Sleep Quality Support

So you're here because...

Are you struggling to switch off at night? Or perhaps you are looking for ways to support your body's natural energy production as you age?

Apigenin is a genuinely fascinating natural compound that touches both of these goals — and it's well worth knowing about, even if you have never heard of it before.

What we recommend, and why

We recommend Vitality Pro Apigenin — more on why below. Apigenin is a natural compound found in chamomile, celery, parsley, oranges, and grapefruit peel — you've almost certainly consumed small amounts of it in your diet without noticing any physical effects.

However, at a concentrated supplement dose, apigenin does two very specific things for healthy ageing:

  • NAD+ protection: your body produces an enzyme called CD38, whose job is to break down NAD+ (the crucial molecule your cells use to produce energy). As we age, CD38 activity naturally increases, meaning your body actively destroys more of the NAD+ it produces. Apigenin acts as a shield, inhibiting CD38 so your NAD+ levels can stay stronger.

If you're taking NR (Nicotinamide Riboside), apigenin helps it work harder and last longer in your system. Together with NR and TMG, it completes what's often called the "NAD+ trilogy." You can find our other two foundational NAD+ recommendations here: NR and TMG.

  • Better sleep quality: there's promising evidence that apigenin helps you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

To be completely transparent: most human research so far has focused on chamomile extract (which naturally contains apigenin) rather than isolated apigenin at high supplement doses. While the results are encouraging, dedicated human trials on pure apigenin specifically are still developing.

Why it's part of our range

Sleep is one of the things people ask us about most, and for many of us, men and women alike, it gets harder from our 40s onwards. For women, perimenopause and menopause can add to that. Apigenin is one of the more interesting compounds being researched in this area, and it sits naturally alongside NR and TMG. If sleep is a real struggle for you, it's well worth speaking to your GP too, as there's a lot of support available.

Verified Form: "Vitality Pro" (grapefruit-derived, 100mg) — 98%+ purity, third-party tested with a published Certificate of Analysis.

Why the certification actually matters

Vitality Pro sources its apigenin from grapefruit peel and is independently third-party lab tested — and crucially, publishes an actual Certificate of Analysis for each batch, tested by an ISO 17025-accredited lab, so you can check the purity claim yourself rather than just taking a brand's word for it. That level of checkable proof is why this is the only apigenin product we recommend.

How to take it

  • Dose: start with one capsule (100mg) a day. As with any supplement or medicine, always start with the lowest effective dose — refer to the label for the full guidance, and only increase if needed and appropriate. Never assume more is better.

  • Timing: because a key benefit of apigenin is sleep support, the best time to take it is in the evening, roughly 30 to 60 minutes before bed.

  • With fat: apigenin is fat-soluble, meaning your body absorbs it far better when taken alongside a small fat-containing snack or your evening meal (such as eggs, nuts, avocado, or full-fat yoghurt).

  • Caffeine: your morning tea and coffee are perfectly fine at other times of the day. Just avoid taking apigenin alongside them, purely because morning caffeine conflicts with the evening timing needed for sleep support.

Worth knowing

  • Medication interactions: apigenin interacts with a group of liver enzymes (CYP450) that process several common medications. Please speak to your GP before starting apigenin if you take blood thinners (like warfarin or aspirin), sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, or any medication where you've been warned to avoid grapefruit juice (as apigenin works through a similar pathway).
A note on the Vitality Pro source: this product is derived from grapefruit peel, purified to 98%+ apigenin — this isn't the same as grapefruit juice, and the caution above relates to apigenin itself, not residual grapefruit compounds.

  • Grapefruit juice: it's well worth avoiding grapefruit juice while taking apigenin, given the shared CYP450 pathway.

  • During active illness: apigenin works partly by moderating a specific immune pathway. While this is beneficial for everyday health, it's not ideal to take when your immune system is working overtime to fight an active infection (like a cold, flu, or virus). Pause your apigenin while you're unwell, and simply resume once you're back to full health.

  • Building up over time: like CoQ10, apigenin is fat-soluble, so it builds up gradually in your body tissues rather than flushing out daily. Stick to the recommended daily dose — more isn't better.

  • Patience: you may notice improvements to your sleep quality within the first few nights, or at least during the first week. The NAD+ protection benefit is much more gradual and works quietly in the background alongside NR — while you won't feel this directly, it contributes to your cellular health over weeks of consistent use.

Do you need to take a break?

You don't need to take planned breaks from this one. The only exception is pausing during an active illness, as noted above.

A note on results

Everyone responds differently to supplements. We can't promise what this will do for you specifically — only that it meets our sourcing standard.

Before you begin, it's well worth reading our guide on things that can affect how your body absorbs supplements.

Track it yourself

Since everyone responds differently, we'd suggest keeping a simple note of how you feel over the first few weeks — sleep quality, how quickly you fall asleep, general daytime energy. It's the easiest way to know if something's actually working for you, not just whether you hope it is.
